Sand drains represent one method that has been used with success to accelerate the rate at which consolidation drainage occurs in fine-grained materials. On what this method is based upon? Explain.
Sand drains is a technique used for ground improvement technique. It helps to boost the consolidation of soil or settlement of finely grained soil making it more efficient and safe to use. The soil behaviour cannot be controlled by human . At some sites the soil may be soft ,clayey and may have low bearing capacity hence to improve such soil ground improvement technique is used and sand drains are one of the type of it.
Sand drains are used to accelerate the drainage consolidation by means of hollow mandrels in the soil.
In this method the hollow mandrels are put inside the ground and bore holes are made in the ground surface . Now the holes are filled with sand and the hollow mandrels are pulled out. To exert surcharge pressure the sand is placed on the drains to increase the pressure on the sand drains due to which they consolidate quickly and the water present in the pores of sand and soil is driven out horizontally and vertically causing the soil to consolidate quickly by drainage of water .
