Sam is a 15-year-old young man who is living in a supported accommodation unit after his mother decided he could no longer live at home. Sam has an older sister who already lives independently. Sam’s family have always lived in the southern suburbs of Adelaide. Sam’s mother is disappointed that he is disengaging from his schooling despite being gifted academically. He has only attended school occasionally since arriving at the accommodation service and instead spends time with friends who have also disengaged from school. Sam has engaged in increasingly risky behaviour that has seen an escalation in his drinking and use of cannabis when he is with his friends. Despite this Sam has good communication skills and has built strong relationships with several staff in the service. Sam talks about his difficulties at home where he describes his mother as having had a series of partners who didn’t “treat her very well”. The violence in the home escalated rapidly around the time that Sam decided he was old enough to defend his mum and intervened in the arguments between his mum and her partner. Sam has not had contact with his father since he was small and the family have been struggling financially for as long as Sam can remember, despite his mum working two jobs. Sam’s mother states she cares about Sam but cannot face being alone and without a partner again.   Task overview: Critically analyse the case study you have selected. Start by describing the situation (approx. 250 words):   Identify the individual/s in the case study and the wider social context within which they are living as well as the social conditions that may have contributed to their situation. Describe the presenting problem and relevant past and social history.

Sam’s mother is disappointed that he is disengaging from his schooling despite being gifted academically.
