Expert Solution
Step 1

Crime is any activity that is not approved by the members of society. For the smooth functioning of society social harmony needs to maintain. There are various rules, norms, values, morals, laws that are established rules of conduct in a society that maintains social peace and harmony in society. But all individuals do not follow the rules and norms of society and they are known as deviants. When the individual violates the legal codes of society then they are said to have committed a crime.

Crime or criminal activity offends the social code of a particular community. Crimes may be divided into various forms. E.H Sutherland has divided crime into two types based on their level of atrocity or seriousness. They are felonies and misdemeanours. Felonies are serious crimes like murder, rape for which a person might be imprisoned for a long period of time. Misdemeanour is less serious crimes like theft or robbery for which the period of imprisonment is less.
