Candida
The fungal infection typically of the skin or mucous membranes caused by a fungus called Candida albicans, is known as Candida or Candidiasis.
Most Common types of Candidiasis are:
1. Vaginal Yeast Infection : It is a fungal infection of the vagina and tissues at the opening of the vulva.
2. Cutaneous Candidiasis : This is caused by the candida fungus on skin and nails.
3. Oral thrush : Here the Candida albicans, the infectious fungus accumulates in the mouth.
Risk Factors, Preventions and Management of Candida
People who can be at high risk for developing the Candidiasis are :
- Who have spent a lot of time in ICU.
- Who have a Central Venous Catheter.
- Who have cancer and gone through chemotherapy, organ transplant or even with low White blood counts, which means basically who has weak Immune System.
- Who have undergone recent surgeries
- Who have diabetes
- Who have kidney failures
- Who have taken lots of antibiotics
- Prematured or Pre-termed babies.
- People who have heart, bone or joint infections and are injected with drugs
Preventions :
- By using antifungal medications to prevent infection
- Antifungal prophylaxis can also be given to pre-termed babies if they are at high risk.
- Keeping your hands clean as washing hands can prevent spreading of germs.
- Avoid having antibiotics unless its extremely needed.
- Getting vaccinated against flu and other infections to avoid further complications.
- Wearing loose cotton underwears
- Cut down on sugar and alcohols.
Management of Candida :
- Can be managed by antifungal cream or pills.
- Can be managed through tablets, ointments or suppositories
- Can be administered through mouth as well
- For Oral Thrush, an antifungal suspension can be used.
