Your assignment is to conduct an experiment on your friends and acquaintances to examine their sincerity in asking and answering the question, “How are you?” Identify the hypothesis you will test. Your experiment will involve three groups of five subjects each: a control group
and two experimental groups. Participants will be placed in the groups as follows.
CONTROL GROUP: As you meet friends over the next few days, greet five of them by saying,
“Hi, how are you?” Record exactly how they answer.
EXPERIMENTAL GROUP 1: For five other friends, allow them to ask how you are first, and reply
by saying, “Great, how are you?” Record exactly how they answer.
EXPERIMENTAL GROUP 2: For five other friends, allow them to ask how you are first, and reply by saying, “Terrible, how are you?” Record exactly how they answer.
In assigning friends to the two experimental groups, be sure to alternate “great” and “terrible”, saying “great” to one and “terrible” to the next, and so forth. Get people into the control group whenever you are able to beat them to the punch.
