Transcribed Image Text:Required beam section modulus
(include units)

Transcribed Image Text:A steel beam is used under a uniformly distributed load (UDL) of 1500 #/ft. The beam can be
assumed to be simply supported with a span of 24 ft. (see sketch below ) From beam table,
case 1 the maximum moment for a UDL on a simply supported beam is equal to Wl²/8.
When w is expressed in Ibs/ft and I is measured in feet then the calculated moment is given in
foot-lbs. We can multiply by 12 to convert the answer to inch-Ibs. If the maximum allowable
stress in the beam is 30 ksi what is the required section modulus for the beam?
You can assume that the beam is continuously supported laterally.
