Reply to the following paragraph below by adding more information. Learning about religion in the way that we did this quarter has completely changed my perspective on it. As I have often mentioned, religion has never appealed to me whatsoever and I have been a pretty diehard atheist my entire life. The issue with this is that I was never willing to keep an open mind and at least learn about what the different religions of the world valued. I have always known that religions have moral teachings and that many people use these teachings to guide their lives, but my assumption was always that even these teachings brought the ideas of a higher power into them. What I have learned is that this is not always the case. For example, Islam places a huge emphasis on the idea of community support. A supportive community has nothing to do with a higher power, and its impact can be huge on the members of it. Community members who are actually fully supported by their community tend to be much happier and even more successful. I also very much enjoyed learning about the ties between the world’s religions and history. All of the religions we learned about in this course are very old, and have played major roles in shaping human history. The stages of growth are also very interesting to me, and they provided me with a much better understanding of how people’s beliefs evolve over the course of their development. One of my biggest disconnects with religion was that I never understood how someone could possibly think of it in a rational way. I now realize that religion is much more about interpretation and how its teachings can be applied to one’s life. The belief in a higher power does not mean the same thing to everyone. For some, it is indeed the belief that there is a god in the sky who is controlling everything that happens on the Earth, and by having a good relationship with him they are securing a good life for themselves. For others, the higher power just represents something which motivates them to do good in the world. I think that knowing the difference between translation and transformation is very important when it comes to religion. Another thing that I always found to be very undesirable about religion is the fact that it seems to completely define a lot of people’s lives. This is an incredibly naive way of thinking, and I am glad that over the years I have been able to recognize how simply false this is for most people. Most people take the translative approach to religion, meaning it is just an aspect of their lives which they enjoy and implement in a variety of ways. Very few people take the full transformative approach to religion, especially in today’s world. The transformative approach to religion was far more common hundreds of years ago when there was pretty much nothing else to explain the world. Overall, my view on religion has changed dramatically as I have become more educated and I think that studying it from a secular standpoint is a necessary part of an education due to the simple fact that it is a major part of our history and society.
