States of Matter
The substance that constitutes everything in the universe is known as matter. Matter comprises atoms which in turn are composed of electrons, protons, and neutrons. Different atoms combine together to give rise to molecules that act as a foundation for all kinds of substances. There are five states of matter based on their energies of attraction, namely solid, liquid, gases, plasma, and BEC (Bose-Einstein condensates).
Chemical Reactions and Equations
When a chemical species is transformed into another chemical species it is said to have undergone a chemical reaction. It consists of breaking existing bonds and forming new bonds by changing the position of electrons. These reactions are best explained using a chemical equation.
![> Reaction 2 [copper (II) nitrate → copper (II) hydroxide]
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is corrosive. If you get it on your skin, wash it off immediately.
1. Using a dispensing pipette, add 3 mL of 3.0M sodium hydroxide solution to the copper (II) nitrate
mixture. (The NaOH is dissolved in water; '3.0M' is a measure of the concentration of the
solution.)
Observe first, then stir with a glass stirring rod and observe again. Record observations!
Now, dip your stirring rod into the solution and then touch it to a piece of red litmus paper. If the
paper turns blue, you have added enough sodium hydroxide solution. If the paper remains red,
add a little more of the sodium hydroxide solution, stir and test again with a fresh piece of litmus
paper. (Red litmus paper turns blue in a basic solution and stays red in an acidic solution.)
4. Record observations.

3.
Blue solid copper (II) hydroxide is one of the products of this reaction. Sodium nitrate is another
product of this reaction, but because it is very soluble in water, you won't be able to see it. Note:
Don't assume that water is a reactant or product in any of these reactions unless you are told
that it is; water will be present in all of the reactions, but in some of the reactions water is only
acting as a solvent in which the reactants and products are dissolved.

![PRELAB Assignment
Lab Day:
IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS: After reading the entire handout, complete the following diagrams of
the five reactions steps. The first one is done for you, as an example of what is expected. This is
due at the start of lab. You will NOT be allowed to complete this lab (at any time and will receive
a score of '0') without turning in this COMPLETED page at the start of lab.
