The Rosewood Massacre
"Rosewood" portrays a heinous long hidden racial
incident that occurred in Florida in 1923.
It
describes a tragedy that led to the destruction of a
prosperous black town. A false accusation of assault
allowed Rosewood's envious white neighbors to
embark on a witch hunt in which at least eight
people (and probably many more) were killed. The
population of Rosewood were scattered, and the
town was wiped off the map. Black survivors and
descendants of Rosewood's former residents finally
received reparations from the state of Florida in the
form of $2Million in 1993.
