PREPARATION OF ACETYLENE
MATERIALS AND REAGENTS
Calcium carbide lumps
Potassium permanganate, 1% solution
Bromine, 0.5% solution in carbon tetrachloride
Test tubes
Test tube holder and rack
Half-gallon ice cream container
Ink bottle
PROCEDURE
1. Fill the half-gallon ice cream container with water up to 2 cm from the brim.
2. Immerse in the container 4 test tubes filled with distilled water.
3. Place approximately 1.5 g CaCz inside a dry ink bottle.
4. Half-fill the ink bottle with water and immediately cover with a cork having a tiny hole at the
center.
5. Immerse the ink bottle into the container of water and collect the gas coming out of the ink
bottle.
6. Test the gas for flammability and active unsaturation.
