Let a be an m*n matrix, then a(:, p) gives  sub-matrix of order m*1 with elements of p-th column of matrix a. Thus a(:, p) gives a column matix with elements of p-th column of a, for 1<= p<= n.

Similarly a(:, p:q) gives a sub-matrix of order m*(q-p+1) with elements of p-th to q-th column of matrix a, for 1<= p, q<= n.

Also a(p,:) =[ ] gives a sub-matrix of order (m-1)*n with the elements same as matrix a except deleted the p-th row. So, a(p,:) =[ ] basically delete the p-th row of matrix a, for 1<= p<= n.
