Meaningful learning theory was proposed by educational psychologist David Ausubel in 1968. In short, Ausubel argued that meaningful learning occurs when new information is related to prior knowledge and understanding. He argued that meaningful learning is a type of cognitive learning which occurs when learners are able to make connections between new information and what they already know.
It states that learning is most effective and durable when new information is related to and integrated with what the learner already knows.
