the 1970s. The technologies used to meet secondary treatment standards have a relatively
large footprint, it uses a relatively large amount of energy, none of the resources present in the
wastewater is being recovered and the operations of the old processes are labor intensive.
There is still a large plot of land available next to the existing wastewater treatment plant and
the city is currently planning for the construction of a brand new facility at this location.
The city management has the vision to build a wastewater resource recovery facility instead of
a conventional wastewater treatment plant. The plant will be designed to recover resources
from wastewater and to minimize the use of external resources for treatment. It will be
designed to reduce the overall greenhouse gas emission by reducing energy consumption and
minimizing truck traffic in and out of the plant. The plant will also be designed to handle the
contaminants load from an additional 250,000 people. However the daily average raw influent
flow used in the design of the new plant will remain the same as the old plant despite of the
25% increase. This is because of various water conservation efforts that are being planned as
well.
You are a junior engineer in the project design team and you are asked to calculate
contaminants loading rates, assist in the design of the screening and grit removal processes as
well as the primary sedimentation process. You will use the last 5 years of the old plant average
operating data for your design work.
Analysis of the last 5 years of operating data shows that the old plant received an average flow
of 90 million gallon per day (MGD) with an average total suspended solids (TSS) concentration
of 250 mgTSS/L and an average BOD concentration of 230mgBODs/L and an average ammonia
(NH3-N) concentration of 40 mgNH3-N/L.
