A Single Population Mean using the Student t Distribution
1. This section deals with the questions of estimating the population mean using the sample mean
when the standard deviation of the population is unknown.
2. Suppose you draw a simple random sample of size n from a population that has an approximately
normal distribution with mean u and unknown population standard deviation o.
t-score of the mean of the sample ī is given as t = 4. Note that s is the standard deviation
of the sample.
t-scores of sample means follow a Student's t-distribution with n – 1 degrees of freedom.
• The t-score of the sample mean ī has the same interpretation as the z-score and measures how
far ī is from its mean u.
For each sample size n, there is a different Student's t-distribution.
