Transcribed Image Text:PREPARATION OF POTASSIUM TRIOXALATOCHROMATE(III)
HYDRATE
Objective
To prepare potassium trioxalatochromate(III) hydrate as an illustration of inorganic synthetic
techniques.
Procedure
Dissolve potassium oxalate (7.0g) and oxalic acid crystals (3.0g) in 100ml of distilled water
by heating and stirring the solution. Add potassium dichromate crystals (2.5g), in small
instalments with continuous stirring since reaction is exothermic. Allow the reaction to
complete and evaporate the solution to ca 10 ml from 100 ml. Add 5-6ml of alcohol and
allow the crystals to form (compound is very soluble in water). Wash the crystals with a
mixture of 50% alcohol and acetone once then with alcohol and acetone respectively.
