Activity 3. Light Absorption & Colored Filters
Materials:
1. Flashlight
2. Red, blue, and green colored/construction papers (whichever is available at
your home)
3. Bond paper - white
4. See through colored cellophane - red, green, blue, transparent
(you may have used clean cellophane at home)
5. Rubber band
Research Questions:
1. Why did the papers look white, red, blue, and green (respectively) in white
light?
2. How did the filters affect the white flashlight beam?
3. Why did the yellow and green papers seem to lose their color when red light
was shined on them?
Procedure
1. Before starting with the procedure, please turn to page 19 of this module so
that you can read and be aware of the science safety rules.
2. Darken the room as much as possible.
3. Turn on the flashlight aim it at the white paper (bond paper). Observe and
record the color of the paper in the data table.
4. Repeat step 2 with the red, blue, and green pieces of paper.
5. Place the red filter in front of the beam of the flashlight as shown using
rubber band to secure the cellophane filter. Shine the filtered flashlight on
the white, red, blue, and green papers and record the colors seen.
6. Repeat using the blue cellophane filter and then the clear cellophane filter.
After each test, record the results.
