Diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by increases blood glucose levels in blood.

It is of two types, they are :

  1. Type 1 Diabetes mellitus: It Insulin - dependent diabetes mellitus, characterized by destruction of the insulin producing cells of pancreas. Seen since birth.
  2. Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Insulin independent diabetes mellitus, it is characterized by decreased glucose absorption by cells due to insulin resistance. In elderly aged people.

Due to presence of high blood glucose levels it leads to many complications.

Polyuria, polydipsia , polyphagia are characteristic features of Diabetes mellitus.
