A train has the effective total properties in the
preceding table. It is desired to be able to completely
stop the train from full speed in 15 seconds, while
maintaining rated supply to the field.
1. Find the number of DC motors needed to run and
decelerate the train without any motor being subjected
to more than its rated capabilities. Assume uniform
load distribution; identical machine models, terminal
voltages, and controls.
2. Derive an expression for the armature current la(t) in
each machine.
3. Derive an expression for the instantaneous terminal
voltage Va(t) required for the controllers. 4. Due to
practical limitations, it is often necessary to stop
regenerative braking once one of the following occurs:
zero-speed, zero Va(t), or zero la(t). Determine the
angular speed (in rpm) at which this occurs.
