Please read the following narrative and (1) identify the Eating Dicorder "Olivia" suffers from; and (2)
explain how the Behavioral, Cognitive and Neuroscience/Biological Perspectives would DIAGNOSE and
TREAT Olivia's disorder. Please use attached Rubric, Week's Class Notes and course text to complete
Post.
Olivia, a 24 year old majoring in chemical enginc.ering and anthropology, believas che is fat. She is 5'4
and weighs 115 pounds. She takes at least 20 pictures of herself everyday, She decsn't like what she
sees. No matter what pose she strikes, or how much she sucks in her stomach, she is just too heavy. She
must lose weight.
Her interest in photography began when she went to Costa Rica with her parents for summer vacation;
she was 13. She loved the geography and the culture, and she became fascinated with the human form
from an aesthetic and biological standpoint. When she receives her Masters degrees, she plans to work
for a pharmaceutical company as a research and marketing consultant (her parents, who both come
from wealth, have contacts in the business world). Olivia wants to see western medicine aid
development in developing countries.
She used to take pictures of herself and show them to her parents or friends, repeatedly asking them if
she "looks fat." Annoyed, they would tell her she looked fine. She still takes pictures, but she doesn't ask
for opinions anymore..."why bother?" she thinks. "No one will tell her the truth."
Olivia has always been told she is intelligent, witty and beautiful. She has confidence in her intellectual
abilities. Her appearance...not so much. It's not that she.believes what they said; it was so long ago.
When she was 13 some girls at her boarding school told her she was really fat and likely would never be
thin, like them. She WAS a little overweight, she agreed. She has dieted, off and on, ever since.
Sometimes, not always, but every so often, Olivia purges. She knows it's not right..if her parents found
outwell what does it matter, she reasons. It's her body. After this cycle of purging, berating herself,
and rationalizing her behavior, Oliyia has a large snack (usually, 2 medium pizzas, a diet cola, a chocolate
cake, and some ice cream). Then she purges...later she will.Fun for several miles. Recently, she's added
"cutting' to her cycle. It hurts terribly, but, she reasons, she has earned this...then, somehow, the cutting
doesn't hurt too much. It actually feels "right", "good." She cannot explain this.
When her parents ask about her social life or if she's seeing someone, she dodges the question. She has
dated, nothing serious. Not since Scott whom she dated last year. Scott told Olivia that she paid too
much attention to her appearance, and tried to assure her that he liked her "just as you are." She
concluded he was lying to her. She KNEW what she looked like: a big fat cow. She didn't blame him for
being dishonest..but she knew she couldn't trust him. She broke up with him a few days later.
