Linear Functions
A linear function can just be a constant, or it can be the constant multiplied with the variable like x or y. If the variables are of the form, x2, x1/2 or y2 it is not linear. The exponent over the variables should always be 1.
Question
Please help! I am not sure how to write an equation based on what I have in the table I made. How do I write my function in function notation?

Transcribed Image Text:**Understanding Independent and Dependent Variables in Functions**
4. It is common practice to think of \( y \) as the dependent variable and \( x \) as the independent variable. What this means is that you find values of \( y \) by choosing values of \( x \) and putting them in some sort of formula, or looking at them on a graph, or picking them out of a table. Another way of thinking about this characteristic of functions is to say "a value of \( y \) is determined by the function, \( f(x) \) when given a value of \( x \)."
For your scenario, state which quantity would be represented by the independent variable (usually \( x \) but doesn’t have to be) and which quantity would be represented by the dependent variable (again, usually \( y \) but doesn’t have to be). Write your function using function notation.

**Data Table:**
- **Number of mechanical pencils used per month:**
- 4, 3, 2, 5, 6, 2, 3, 2, 2
- **Total cost of mechanical pencils per month in dollars:**
- 8, 6, 4, 4, 10, 12, 4, 6, 4, 5
**Explanation:**
In the data table above, there are two rows of information.
1. **Number of mechanical pencils used per month**: This row indicates the quantity of pencils consumed over a month. The sequence is as follows: 4, 3, 2, 5, 6, 2, 3, 2, 2.
2. **Total cost of mechanical pencils per month in dollars**: This row shows the corresponding cost in dollars for the pencils used each month. The amounts are: 8, 6, 4, 4, 10, 12, 4, 6, 4, 5.
**My two quantities are:**
1. **First quantity**: The number of mechanical pencils used per month.
2. **Second quantity**: The total cost of mechanical pencils per month.
**Question:**
2) Is the relationship you've chosen a function?
