Sutherland and Maxwell defined social stratification as the differentiation, placing individuals or groups one above the other. The people of the society are arranged in a social hierarchy that consists of various strata. For example, the stratification of class includes upper class, middle class and lower class or working class.
All societies are evolving and the stratification also develops or withers away. One can change the status occupied in the society based on merit. The societies are either open or closed systems. Open societies allow such changes in status or position occupied in the social hierarchy.
