Question

Place the following gases in increasing order of diffusion:

CH4, He, SO2, CH3Cl, and O2

Expert Solution
Step 1

Since the rate of diffusion is inversely proportional to the square root of molar mass of gas.

Hence the heavier the molecule is, less will be the rate of effusion.

So the order of rate of effusion will be opposite of that of molar mass of the gases

Since molar mass of gases are

CH4 = 16 g/mol

He = 4 g/mol

SO2 = 64 g/mol

CH3Cl = 50.5 g/mol

O2 = 32 g/mol

Hence the order of molar mass => SO2 > CH3Cl > O2 > CH4 > He
