Panganiban, Angelene BSHM 1-4 The Concept of Self: Reflection Different philosophers discussed different concept of self. Their theories contribute a big part on our lives since they created it. It help us to understand ourselves even more. Some of this philosophers discussed the concept of self a little bit complicated but for me, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, a French philosopher and phenomenologist is the one who discuss the self properly. In my own understanding, Maurice said that our self is compose by body and mind along with the perception in the world. Our mind and body cannot be separated because it is the two things to help ourselves become whole. For him, we cannot say that we have self if we do not have mind, body and perception in our world. Our mind is the one who create decisions and the one figuring out what action we are going to do, while our body is the one who will take the action to make it happen. Our body is the instrument we use to do the things that we need to do and we cannot use our body if we don't have mind. However, before taking an action we should consider the situation and our perception will help us to do that. The reality is very complicated but if our perception in any aspect is right then we can do the things in a good way. In this situation, our mind, body and our perception is very important because it will bring us a happy and smooth living. To the other philosophers, I think David Hume theory is much likely to Maurice. However, he said that self doesn't exist but there is only impressions and ideas. In my own understanding, David said that there is no self but he didn't said that there is no mind and body. David Hume think that we just have impressions and ideas, but how we can create any of it if we do not have mind and body especially our perception? We do impressions because we feel something that is not right for us. This impressions will results to create an idea. Our mind will function and create an idea to do a solution and when we do a solution it will results to a good outcome. Our impressions is connected to the ideas we make. If we feel something, we will come up to an idea that we think it is the solution. However, by creating ideas we should consider the situation. Like for Maurice, before we take an action we should consider our perception in the situation. We can make many ideas but in each ideas we make there is a consequences. For me, this two philosophers are the one who discuss the self easy and understandable. Our self cannot function if we don't have mind and body especially our perception in our world. In addition, our impressions will help us to create an ideas. We cannot just do an action, we should have a better plan and this two philosophers shows me how to understand and have a better self.

The Concept of Self: Reflection
Different philosophers discussed different concept of self. Their theories contribute a
big part on our lives since they created it. It help us to understand ourselves even more. Some
of this philosophers discussed the concept of self a little bit complicated but for me, Maurice
Merleau-Ponty, a French philosopher and phenomenologist is the one who discuss the self
properly. In my own understanding, Maurice said that our self is compose by body and mind
along with the perception in the world. Our mind and body cannot be separated because it is
the two things to help ourselves become whole. For him, we cannot say that we have self if
we do not have mind, body and perception in our world. Our mind is the one who create
decisions and the one figuring out what action we are going to do, while our body is the one
who will take the action to make it happen. Our body is the instrument we use to do the
things that we need to do and we cannot use our body if we don't have mind. However,
before taking an action we should consider the situation and our perception will help us to do
that. The reality is very complicated but if our perception in any aspect is right then we can
do the things in a good way. In this situation, our mind, body and our perception is very
important because it will bring us a happy and smooth living.
To the other philosophers, I think David Hume theory is much likely to Maurice.
However, he said that self doesn't exist but there is only impressions and ideas. In my own
understanding, David said that there is no self but he didn't said that there is no mind and
body. David Hume think that we just have impressions and ideas, but how we can create any
of it if we do not have mind and body especially our perception? We do impressions because
we feel something that is not right for us. This impressions will results to create an idea. Our
mind will function and create an idea to do a solution and when we do a solution it will
results to a good outcome. Our impressions is connected to the ideas we make. If we feel
something, we will come up to an idea that we think it is the solution. However, by creating
ideas we should consider the situation. Like for Maurice, before we take an action we should
consider our perception in the situation. We can make many ideas but in each ideas we make
there is a consequences. For me, this two philosophers are the one who discuss the self easy

perception in our world. In addition, our impressions will help us to create an ideas. We
cannot just do an action, we should have a better plan and this two philosophers shows me
how to understand and have a better self.
