Question
A compression bar having a square cross
section with sides b 5 50 mm is subjected to load P.
The bar is constructed from two pieces of wood that
are connected by a glued joint along plane pq that
is inclined at angle a 5 8 35 . The allowable stress in
the wood in compression is 11.5 MPa and in shear is
4.5 MPa. Also, the allowable stress in the glued joint
in compression is 3.5 MPa and in shear is 1.25 MPa.
Determine the maximum load P that can be applied
to the bar.
