5. What is PM2.5, and what is a major source of PM2.5 in Arizona air?
1. What is Ozone and how is it formed near the ground?
Answer: Ozone (O3) is a reactive gas which is made up of three oxygen atoms. Ozone is produced naturally as well as man-made. It is present in the atmospheric layers of stratosphere and troposphere. Ozone is also produced very close to the surface of the earth and is known by the name as ground level ozone. It is formed by the chemical reactions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOX) in the presence of sunlight.
2. Is Ozone more prevalent in summer or winter? Why is this so?
Answer: Ozone(O3) is more prevalent in summers than winters. The reactions which produce ozone gas are catalyzed by heat and sunlight. As the sunlight is more in summer months and weather heats up, ground-level ozone increases-so it is more in the summer months.
