Opiate addiction is a major problem in the U.S. today. What facets of the problem would be prominent in the analysis of sociologists associated with each of the three sociological perspectives?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The three sociological perspectives are as described below:

1. Structural-Functionalist perspective: This perspective considers society to be like an organism that performs certain functions. Consequently, every organ or aspect of the society contributes to the overall structure, functioning, and sustenance of the society.

2. Conflict perspective: This perspective asserts that social phenomena and social institutions can be understood in terms of conflict, and not consensus. For instance, a social problem can be understood as arising out of power differentials - such as, when a dominant group mistreats the subordinate group.

3. Symbolic interactionism: This perspective states that any social phenomenon arises from social interactions and is understood in terms of the meaning attached to the same. Consequently, this perspective holds that people are actively involved in shaping the social world they inhabit.
