In the Mahayana tradition, Buddhism can incorporate and cultivate
religious and cultural expressions. In particular, Vajrayana Buddhism can
see a blending of Buddhism with Tibetan religion and culture. Vajrayana
means "The Diamond Vehicle" or "The Vehicle of the Lightning Bolt." A
diamond implies strength. A diamond is one of the most powerful cutting
tools we have. In this light, Buddhist Awareness cuts through our illusionary
ways of seeing reality. A lightning bolt also has the power to "cut through"
space and time and bring about flashes of enlightenment in the darkness of
our greeds, passions, aversions, angers, and hatreds.

In the 1400s, a reform movement in Tibet established a government
that was "religion and state" combined. The Dalai Lama became both the
"president" and a "pope-like" figure for the country as a whole. Today, the
present Dalai Lama is considered to be the leader of Tibet, but he lives in
exile from Tibet (since 1959) when China incorporated Tibet into its kingdom
as a special province. The present Dalai Lama is believed to be the
fourteenth reincarnation of the first Dalai Lama of Tibet. In all his
reincarnations, many believe that the Dalai Lama is the very incarnation of a
heavenly Cosmic Buddha, The Deity of Wisdom and Compassion. Many see
the present Dalai Lama as a living God, although humbly he is quick to deny
that he is a deity or divine.
Lama is a Tibetan word for monk, master, guide, and guru. Dalai is a
word that means "ocean," in that one priest, in particular, is representative
of the "ocean of compassion" that is The Buddha-Cosmic-Force in the
Universe (The Deity of Wisdom and Compassion). The Dalai Lama is here to
