White blood cells are colourless. They are involved in defence. There are two types of leukocytes.
1. Granulocytes - Granules are present in the cytoplasm of granulocytes which can be stained with specific dyes. On the basis of staining, they are three types -
A) Basophils - They are stained with basic dyes. They secrete histamine, serotonin and heparin.
B) Acidophils - They are stained with acidic dyes. They are involved in allergic reactions and provide protection against parasitic infection.
C)Neutrophils - They can be stained with any dyes. They are phagocytic in nature.
2. Agranulocytes - Granules are absent in cytoplasm of agranulocytes.
A. Monocytes - They perform phagocytosis.
B. Lymphocytes - They provide cell-mediated and antibody-mediated immunity.
