Name the substances secreted and absorbed in the large
intestine
Introduction:
The large intestine is a portion of the alimentary canal. The small intestine merges with the large intestine, which though wider than the small intestine, is much shorter, being in total 1.5 to 1.8 meters long. The large intestine is divided into nine parts. Starting with the caecum into which the ileum opens, this opening is being guarded by the ileocecal valve, which allows outflow but prevents the backflow of intestinal contents. Then there is the vermiform appendix which is about 7.5 cm in length and terminates in a blind end. Next, ascending colon passes up along the abdomen's right side to bend sharply at the right hepatic flexure and leads into the transverse colon. This further bends at the left splenic flexure and the descending colon, which goes down the left side of the abdomen to the sigmoid colon and the rectum, which is 12.5 to 15 cm long, the exit of which is guarded by two sphincter muscles (anal sphincters-internal and external), is known as the anus.
