The internal framework of the human body is known as the human skeleton. 270 bones make up the human skeletal system at birth. Some of these bones fuse and decrease to around 206 bones by adulthood. The maximum density of bone mass is reached at around 21 years age. The human skeleton can be categorized into two parts. These are namely the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton is composed of the the skull, vertebral column, the rib cage, and other associated bones. On the other hand, the appendicular skeleton, is composed of the shoulder girdle, the pelvic girdle and the bones of the upper and lower limbs, that is attached to the axial skeleton. There are six major functions performed by the human skeleton, these are: support, movement, production of blood cells, storage of minerals, protection, and endocrine regulation.
