subdural space, and the subarachnoid space?
Introduction:
The spinal cord is a long cylindrical-shaped lower region of the central nervous system. It is surrounded by three meninges and extends from the atlas upper border to the lower border of the first lumbar vertebrae in an adult. In children, it stretches up to the third lumbar vertebrae. Superiorly, it continues with the medulla oblongata. Inferiorly it ends as conus medullaris.
The spinal cord links the brain with the peripheral nervous system. The sensory information initially reaches the spinal cord from the sensory receptors. From there, the information is transmitted to the brain for further processing. After processing, the signals move back from the brain to the spinal cord. From there, the signals are sent to the effector organs. The spinal cord also performs simple reflexes such as withdrawal reflexes. For such a reflex, the sensory nerve terminals are present in the spinal cord.
