Question

Name some different examples of ISOTONIC IV solutions & and why a patient might require this type of fluid.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Isotonic solution contains an electrolyte balance similar to plasma in bloodstream.

Examples are

  1.  0.9% normal saline with NaCl : this fluid is used when patient has lost the fluid volume from blood loss or trauma, diarrhea, Hyponatremia , severe vomiting etc.          (this fluid has higher chloride content  which sometimes cause renal vasoconstrictions affecting blood flow to the kidney)
  2. Lactated ringers :  this fluid is used for dehydration for restoring hydration and fluid balance in the body during burn traumas ,often used during surgery.                                ( it is  different from saline solution in a way that Lactated ringers contain less chloride content which can avoid renal vasoconstrictions)
  3. 5% dextrose in water (D5W) : provide free water to help renal excretion (this solution starts as isotonic then changes to hypotonic when  dextrose is metabolized) generally used for hypernatremia.
  4. Ringers solution : this fluid is used for dehydration , sodium depletion and replace GI tract fluid losses.(this is different from LR in a way that ringers solution doesn't contain Lactate in it )
