  1. Molecular or atomic solids and liquids are bound in their condensed phases by cohesive forces between the atoms or molecules. What is the extent of these cohesive forces in the gas phase?
Expert Solution
Step 1

Cohesive forces are the intermolecular attractive forces that is present between the molecules of a substance.

A matter can exist in three phases namely solid, liquid and gas-phase. On the basis of their intermolecular forces, solids and liquids are collectively known as condensed matter.

The condensed phases (solids and liquids) of a matter have molecules very closely attracted towards each other, hence, the intermolecular forces existing in them are strong. Due to which they are highly dense and are resistant to compression. Also, the particles of condensed phase are very less movable (in liquids) or show zero movability (in solids).
