Oxidation reduction reaction (Redox reaction)
Its a chemical reaction that involve simultaneously reduction and oxidation process.
In this reaction one reactant is oxidized another is reduced.
Oxidation number:
• Oxidation number of atoms in pure element or Atoms in free or uncombined elements is 0 (zero).
• oxidation number of oxygen usually -2 in most of its compound except in case of H2O2 (peroxide) where its oxidation number is -1, KO2 (superoxide) where its oxidation number is - 1/2 and OF2 where its oxidation number is + 2.
• sum of oxidation in the neutral compound is zero
• oxidation number of the monoatomic ions is equal to the charge on the ions.
• oxidation number of halogen is usually -1.
• oxidation number of atoms in the polyatomic ion is equal to the sum of the charge on the ion.
