Team development stages according to Tuckman
Bruce Wayne Tuckman first created and published the first four stages of team development in 1965. His "Tuckman's Stages" hypothesis was derived from studies on team dynamics. He felt—as is still widely accepted today—that these phases were a necessary part of the process if a team was to develop to the point where they could work well as a unit and produce outcomes of the highest caliber.
Together with Mary Ann Jensen, Tuckman developed the fifth stage—"adjourning"—into four phases in 1977. The team is said to be at the adjourning stage when they are finishing up their present project or when a competition season is coming to a close since they will soon be joining other teams or starting new projects.
A high-performing team typically experiences melancholy at the conclusion of a season or project since the team members, who had essentially become "one," are suddenly parting ways.
