Maximum number of electrons in an s subshell =

Expert Solution
Step 1

The shell in the atom represent the main energy level in which electrons occupy. The shell of the atom represent the principal quantum number (n).

n=1  K-shelln=2  L-shelln=3M-shell  so on

The shell consists of a number of sub energy levels. The subshell represents the sub -energy level which is occupied by the electrons. The subshell is represented by azimuthal quantum number (l).

As we know, that for a given value of n, l=0 to l=n-1

n=1 , l=0     (one value)n=2 , l=0 and 1 (two value)n=3, l=0,1 and 2 (three value)
