Question
Just like transitions between electron energy states (n) produce characteristic spectral lines, transitions
between angular momentum states produce certain types of spectral lines. When scientist first observed
the spectral lines associated with angular momentum transitions, they did not know what they meant,
but recognized four distinct groups and labeled them Sharp, Principal, Diffuse and Fundamental (S, P, D,
F).
Later Quantum Mechanics explained that these distinct groups of spectral lines were associated with the
different magnitude of angular momentum states (I). The transitions associated with thel = 0 states
produced the S group of spectral lines, while the transitions associated with the I= 1, 2 and 3 states
produced the P, D and F groups respectively. Due to historical reason the S, P, D, F labeling was kept in
chemistry, but the letters are completely arbitrary and simply tell the magnitude of the angular
momentum (or the I quantum number), which is not limited to only 4 states.
Match the S, P, D, F labels with their respective I quantum numbers.
