These are the compounds formed by combination of ions(charged particles )when the constituting atoms gains or loses electrons to combine together.

Naming ionic compound :

  • The cations or metal are named first.
  • Non metals or anions are named ending with -"ide"
  • The oxidation number is presented in parentheses.
  • The polyatomic anions are named with ending in "ate"(more number of oxygen) or "ite"(less number of oxygen atoms are present in comparison to -ate ending compound)

Covalent compound :

These are the compounds formed by elements with complete transfer of electrons from one element to atom of another element.

Naming covalent compound :

  • The non element present farthest left in the periodic table , should be named by its elemental name.
  • The other non metal should be named in ending "ide".
  • The prefixes mono, di , tri etc should be used to indicate the number of atoms of the specific constituent  present
