CARBON
The origin of the name ‘carbon’ is a Latin word ‘carbo’ which means charcoal. This may come as a surprise to you, but it is the fourth most abundant element in the entire universe. And it is the second most abundant element in our bodies, the first being oxygen. As a matter of fact, all organic substances in the world contain carbon in some form or element, which is why it is the base for the entire branch of organic chemistry.
The atomic number of carbon is 6, which represents the number of electrons. It is represented by the symbol C and is a non-metal. It has 6 protons, 6 neutrons and obviously 6 electrons. A carbon atom is considered to be special and unique because it can bond with other carbon atoms to an almost unlimited degree. It is because its atom is very small in size and can conveniently fit in as a part of larger molecules. Each of its atoms has four electrons in its outer shell called valence electrons and can form for chemical bonds with other atoms and molecules.
Uses of Carbon in Everyday Life
Man has used carbon since time immemorial for various purposes, and it is an element found in abundance in the Earth’s crust. Carbon belongs to Periodic Table group 14 and has atomic number 6. Carbon has a unique self-linking property known as ‘catenation’ due to its tetravalency. Carbon creates a variety of organic molecules as a result of catenation. Carbon can be found in nature as coal, charcoal, and its allotropic form (diamond, graphite, and fullerene), among other things.
These carbon forms are used to form various products that we use in our daily lives. For instance, human body contains substantial amounts of carbon. It is also available in food, plants, wood, fossil fuel, methane gas, petroleum products.
To put it another way, we can say that our lives are “carbon-based.” Almost all biological compounds have it as their backbone. Carbon is extremely useful in all areas of Science, including chemical, physical, and biological research. The various uses of carbon are listed below:
- About 18% of the human body is made up of carbon as they behave as building blocks of our body in the form of hydrocarbons. Our skin, cells, hair all are made up of carbon. They form carbohydrates which provide us energy.
- Carbon dioxide is one of the most important gases present in the atmosphere. We release carbon dioxide during respiration and plants inhale it that maintains a complete balance in the form of the carbon cycle in all biological systems and play the most important role in their survival.
- Carbon is present widely in fossil fuels like coal and other organic compounds such as petroleum, natural gas,etc.
- Allotropes of carbon are used for various purposes. Like, diamond is used for making tools for cutting or drilling, they are widely used in making jewellery. Graphite is used in making electrical appliances, pencil leads, etc., and fullerene is used as photosensitizers and drug delivery agents in the body.
- Various synthetic compounds such as carbon rubbers, shoe soles, tires of vehicles, etc. are made up of carbon. Coal tar is a form of carbon itself that is used in making roads.
- In Food Industry: Carbonated beverages are widely used in food industries.
- In Fire Extinguishers: Carbon dioxide is used in fire extinguishers. They work by displacing oxygen in the area that has caught fire.
- Carbon is used as a base for the ink in inkjet printers.
- Carbon, in the form of carbon dioxide, is used in the manufacture of many fizzy and carbonated drinks. It is also used in fire extinguishers.
- Dry ice, which is the solid form of carbon dioxide, is used as a cooling agent.
- Freon, is used in cooling systems and devices like refrigerators and air conditioners.
- Carbon is also used to manufacture many heat resistant devices and tools and metal cutters.
- It is used as a decorative tool in many jewelry items.
- Carbon monoxide, extracted through metallurgical process, is used as a reducing agent to obtain many elements and compounds.
- Vegetal carbon, which is an amorphous form of carbon, is utilized as a bleaching agent and a gas absorbent.
- Carbon is used in the rim of automobiles as a black fume pigment.
- Calcium carbide is used as a welding agent for cutting metals, in the preparation of acetylene and other organic compounds.
