Concept of limiting reagent:
Suppose, in a reaction, X and Y react in a ratio of x : y number of moles, i.e. "x" number of moles of X reacts with "y" number of moles of the Y, and only then the desired product is obtained. But in a certain situation, if X is not available as much as it is required (less than x mole) with Y being y moles, then after the completion of the reaction Y will be left unreacted and the whole of the X would have been consumed. Conclusively, the reason the reaction was ceased is the limited quantity of X. Hence, the limiting reagent is X in this case.
Limiting reagent is that reagent that is present in less than the required quantity and because of that, the reaction ceases.
