Lone black mothers give birth to nearly 70% of black children. Even after the post-welfare-reform reduction in child poverty, such mothers are much more likely to live in poverty than married mothers. They're much more likely to pass on their hardship to their offspring.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan outlined the increasing proportion of black children who grow up in families headed by single mothers in his 1965 study on the black family. He linked the rise to black men's unstable economic situation, saying that many of them were no more capable of fulfilling their traditional position as the family's main breadwinner. Moynihan claimed that growing up in households without a male breadwinner harmed black children's prospects of getting out of poverty and that the expansion of such families would make it difficult for blacks to benefit from the civil rights movement's legal and structural reforms.
