Expert Solution
Step 1

The cell membrane is semi-permeable and envelops the cellular content. It regulates the entry and exit of the selective molecules and hence is known as selectively permeable. When the movement of molecules, ions, etc is along the concentration gradient and there is no energy is required it is known as passive transport whereas if the movement is against the concentration gradient the transport becomes energy driven and is known as active transport.

Channel proteins act as transport proteins and carry out passive transport. They are like pores in the membrane move water and ions along the concentration gradient and are not energy-driven. The channel proteins which are responsible for the movement of water are known as aquaporins. The ion channels are responsible for the diffusion of ions across the membrane along the concentration gradient.

Step 2

Resting membrane potential: -

The potential of the neural membrane when it is not sending any signals and is at rest. The inside of the neuron is negative as compared to the outside of the neuron. More sodium ions are outside of the membrane while more potassium ions are resent inside of the membrane.  It is because though the movement of ions like potassium is easy, for the movement of other ions such as sodium there are energy driven pumps. This creates a difference in voltage between inside and outside of the membrane of about -70millivolts (mV)

K+ ions are mostly are present inside the cells in higher concentrations as compared to outside of the membrane. K+ ions pass across the membrane through potassium channels out of the cell down its concentration gradient and hence the inside of the cell will lose the positive charge it will become more negative.

Hence, option B is the right answer that the inside of the cell membrane will become more negative.
