List six risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease
The heart is the organ that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The heart pumps blood through tubes known as blood vessels. Arteries, veins, and capillaries are the three main blood vessels. Together, the heart and the associated blood vessels form the cardiovascular system.
The heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the pulmonary vein into the left atrium. From here, blood is pumped to the left ventricle, from where it is pumped to all body structures through the aorta. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from all parts of the body through the vena cavas. It pumps blood to the right ventricle, from where blood is sent for oxygenation to the lungs via the pulmonary artery.
Diseases or conditions that affect the cardiovascular system are known as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). CVDs are dangerous as they can affect the functioning of the heart (without which the organs cannot receive oxygen, nutrients, etc.).
