The muscular organ present in the mouth which is covered by a layer of mucosa which is a soft and pink tissue is known as tongue. It contains papillae on it which is present in the form of tiny bumps on its surface and are covered by the taste buds.
The tongue helps in the mastication which is a process of chewing by keeping the food between the teeth grinding surface. It also helps in swallowing the food by softening the food before it is swallowed. The taste buds present on the tongue contain taste receptors for salty, sweet, bitter, sour, spice and umami tasting substances. It also contains sensory nerves which transmits the information of taste to the brain. Tongue contains many internal muscles which helps it to roll during speech.
