Question

isotope with one more neutron

Expert Solution
Step 1

Isotope are one of two or more species of atoms of a chemical element with the same atomic number and position in the periodic table and nearly identical chemical behaviour but with different atomic masses and physical properties. Every chemical element has one or more isotopes.

All isotopes of a given element have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons in each atom.

Step 2

Example :

Carbon has two isotopes:  12C and 13C

Both show the same chemical features because of the same atomic number (6). But the mass of 13C is larger than that of 12C because 13C has one more neutron.

12C :

Number of protons = atomic number = 6

Number of neutrons = Mass number – number of protons = 12 – 6 = 6

13C :

Number of protons = atomic number = 6

Number of neutrons = Mass number – number of protons = 13 – 6 = 7
