I was engaged as a freelance project manager to locate someone to fill a highly specialized position. When I asked an outstanding candidate about her salary, she told me a figure that really was far below market average. I guided her to a price that was about twice her original bid but 30% less than my client's budget. I did not inform it to my client and she was employed at the wage I suggested.
Is there anything I did wrong in the eyes of either party? If you were in the project manager’s situation, how would you have handled this negotiation differently? Explain.

- 5. A good salesperson can sell $4,000,000 worth of goods, while a poor one can sell only $3,000,000 worth of goods. Job applicants know if they are good or bad, but the fim does not. Assuming risk-neutral salespersons and no opportunistic behavior, what level must the fixed salary be so that the fim can distinguish a prospective good salesperson from a poor one, and thereby avoid hiring a poor one?Why do you think fringe benefits are important enough to influence an employee's choice of employer and what are some specific examples of benefits that might appeal to prospective employees? Post your response and research (at least two scholarly resources) in a descriptive one-page memo or report in Microsoft Word. Your response should explain your findings in relation to why fringe benefits are important to employees. The operations vice president of Security Home Bank has been interested in investigating the efficiency of the bank’s operations. She has been particularly concerned about the costs of handling routine transactions at the bank and would like to compare these costs at the bank’s variousbranches. If the branches with the most efficient operations can be identified, their methods can be studied and then replicated elsewhere. While the bank maintains meticulous records of wages and other costs, there has been no attempt thus far to show how those costs are related to the various services provided by the bank. The operations vice president has asked your help in conducting an activity-based costing study of bank operations. In particular, she would like to know the cost of opening an account, the cost of processing deposits and withdrawals, and the cost of processing other customer transactions. The Westfield branch of Security Home Bank has submitted the following cost data for last year:…
- Recently, the owner of a Trader Joe's franchise decided to change how she compensated her top manager. Last year, she paid him a fixed salary of $65,000, and her store made $120,000 in profits (not counting payment to her top manager). She suspected the store could do much better and feared the fixed salary was causing her top manager to shirk on the job. Therefore, this year she decided to offer him a fixed salary of $30,000 plus 15 percent of the store's profits. Since the change, the store is performing much better, and she forecasts profits this year to be $280,000 (again, not counting the payment to her top manager). Assuming the change in compensation is the reason for the increased profits, and that the forecast is accurate, (a) Which compensation method (the old one or the new one) will the manager prefer? Please explain why. (b) Which compensation method (the old one or the new one) would the owner of the franchise prefer? Please explain why. In a previous job at another agency, you excelled at website design, but you were also asked to pitch the agency's services to potential clients. Unfortunately, you did not excel at this aspect of the job, and you were let go when the agency had to lay off 10% of its staff. The new opportunity will not require you to pitch new clients. How should you approach your former boss for a recommendation that focuses on your web design skills?Danielle Hastings was recently hired as a cost analyst by CareNet Medical Supplies Inc. Jerrod asks Danielle into his office and the following conversation takes place: Jerrod: Danielle, you’re new here, aren’t you? Danielle: Yes, I am. Jerrod: Well, Danielle, I’m not at all pleased with capital investment analysis that you performed on this new warehouse. I need that warehouse for my production. If I don’t get it, where am I going to place out output? Danielle: Well, we need to get product into our customer’s hands. Jerrod: I agree, and we need a warehouse to do that. Danielle: My analysis does not support constructing a new warehouse. The numbers don’t lie; the warehouse does not…
- 5. Unemployment insurance and permanent job loss. Workers sometimes lose their jobs due to international trade. These jobs are permanently gone, and many displaced workers have difficulty finding a similar job. The jobs they can find in a few months tend to offer much lower wages than their old job. Consider the following two proposals to provide unemployment insurance for such workers. Explain your arguments for or against each policy. a) Workers displaced from industries identified as impacted by foreign trade receive extended unemployment benefits. They will receive unemployment benefits for an extra 26 weeks beyond the normal 26 weeks eligibility. b) These workers receive unemployment benefits up to 26 weeks. In addition, if they accept a job at a lower pay than their old job, they are guaranteed 50% of the difference in earnings as a wage supplement for two years.
