Is the sex of a person making a friend request on Facebook to someone they do not know associated with whether or not the request is accepted? To answer this question, students researchers at Hope College made up fake Facebook profiles, one representing a Hope College female and one representing a Hope College male student. The profiles were made to look as similar as possible except for a couple pictures of fake students, their names, and of course their sex. Friend requests were sent out to all 219 4th year students at the college, 118 were randomly assigned to receive the friend request from the female students and 101 were randomly assigned to receive the friend request from the male student. Here are the results.     FEMALE   MALE    TOTAL Accepted   YES 61 18 79 Friend Request?     NO 57 83 140    TOTAL   118 101 219 What kind of study design could the students have used to insure that there were equal number of students receiving the male and female profiles?
