Question

Interpret the outcome of direct and indirect immunofluorescent
antibody testing.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Fluorescent Antibody techniques are utilized for the rapid visualization of bacteria that involves the attachment of a fluorescent marker known as fluorogen to the constant region of an antibody that results in the reporter molecule that has certain advantages like quick to use, easy to visualize and able to bind to target markers with high specificity. These techniques can be categorized into two: direct fluorescent antibody technique in which a labeled mAb binds an antigen or indirect fluorescent antibody technique in which secondary polyclonal antibodies bind patient antibodies that react to a prepared antigen.

Step 2

DIRECT FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE:
This technique uses a fluorescently labeled mAb (monoclonal antibodies) to bind and illuminate the target antigen. This technique is used for the rapid diagnosis of the bacterial infections. The fluorescent labeled antibodies bind to the bacteria on the slide of the fluorescent microscope allowing the fast detection. Thus, it is very useful for visualization of certain bacteria that are difficult to isolate from the sample.
