Indicators of a Chemical Reaction
How can you know when a chemical reaction has occurred? A chemical reaction can result in formation of a precipitate, formation of a gas, or a change in color. The release of heat or light can also indicate a chemical reaction.  These observations are called indicators of a chemical reaction. They don’t guarantee that a reaction has taken place, but if you see one of these changes when you mix chemicals, you are alerted that a reaction may have occurred.  A chemical reaction is the process of breaking and forming bonds. This produces new molecules with different properties from the original ones.

The following are clues that indicate that a chemical change may have occurred:

  • Unexpected color change or odor change
  • Formation of a gas (bubbles form)
  • Formation of a precipitate (solid forms in a liquid)
  • Energy change (change in temperature, light, sound)

Don’t be fooled – A chemical reaction has not occurred when you:

  • See the fizz when you open a soft drink
  • Mix a yellow and blue solution to get a green solution
  • Freeze or boil water

Details are provided on the data chart attached.

We examined the properties of substances before and after they interacted with each other. Analyze and interpret the data chart attached. Choose three substances below that show chemical reactions; Provide the video number and explain why each interaction is a chemical reaction. Provide evidence from the chart that proves the change is chemical and not physical.
