TITLE:
Detection and Characterization of Escherichia coli variants in Bued River, Benguet, Philippines through Fecal Coliform Analysis via Membrane Filtration Technique
INTRODUCTION:
Bued River is a major flowing river in the province of Benguet in Cordillera Administrative Region. This 32.23km river serves as a major water source used for aquaculture, agriculture, domestic and industrial purposes in the city of Baguio, municipality of Itogon and Tuba, and its neighboring provinces, La Union and Pangasinan.
As a major water source that traverses 32 barangays of Baguio City, 7 barangays of Tuba and 2 barangays in Itogon, this river system affects the life of organisms within its vicinity. In river systems, microorganisms such as bacteria can survive, reproduce, and disperse in a higher rate (Payus, 2018). In the article of U.S. Geological Survey, most bacteria are safe to people and other macroscopic organisms. However, some bacteria, some of which live in the intestinal tracts of warm-blooded animals, have the potential to cause illnesses and infections in humans and animals, like the bacterium, Escherichia coli. With this, the Bued River is the chosen site for this study to detect and characterize variants of Escherichia coli through Fecal Coliform Analysis via Membrane Filtration Technique. This study aims to know if there are various pathogenic and other strains of E. coli present in Bued River that can potentially cause serious waterborne diseases in both humans and other organisms near the said location. As one of the Class C – River in the Philippines declared by the Department of Environment and Natural
Through Fecal Coliform Analysis, researchers will know if the river has been contaminated with an elevated number of feces of organisms with pathogenic E. coli and using Membrane Filtration Technique, the researchers will be able to identify variants of E. coli and be able to characterize the different variants whether commensals or pathogenic.
